BESCHRIJVING

The book explains cinema as a cultural technique of trance, unconsciously transforming everyday spatio-temporal perception and thus the matrix of experience in a socio-cultural context. The archaeology of experimental and anthropological cinema leads into psycho-physiological laboratories of the 19th century. Its techniques of testing, measuring and classifying mind, movement and behaviour are traced as prehistory of cinema. The cinematic unconscious thus proves to be an important link between mind and machine, relating it to cybernetic models of the mind developed at the same time. Cinema's subjectivity then cannot just be explained by structural psychoanalysis (J. Lacan) but relies on mutually interdependent fields of research. Three major fields of experimental and anthropological filmmaking are analysed : the Soviet avant-garde with Dziga Vertov and his background in Russian psycho-reflexology and V.M. Bechterevs theory of trance; Jean Rouch and his theory of cine-trance and the feed-back; and the New American Cinema with Maya Deren and Gregory Bateson conceptualising the organisation of time, space, movement and feedback trance in anthropological filmmaking. Through personal and systematic catenations, avant-garde filmmaking is closely linked to the emerging aesthetics of feedback in contemporary history of cybernetics. From this, a general model of film perception is derived that is conceived of as a specific relation of media, subjectivity and communication. The book devises steps to an ecology of the cinematic mind.
