BESCHRIJVING

Body-wave seismic interferometry applied to earthquake- and storm-induced wavefields The Earth can be imaged using seismic waves. A well-developed technique for imaging uses reflected waves. With this technique, a high-resolution image can be obtained when well-sampled arrays of sources and receivers are used. For imaging the shallow Earth, controlled seismic sources and receivers are deployed. For imaging the deep Earth, however, controlled sources are often too expensive or too destructive. Instead, especially earthquakes are utilized. The limited and irregular distribution of earthquakes makes it tedious to obtain accurate images. In this thesis we evaluate a technique to still obtain regularly sampled data, for acquiring insight in the deep Earth.

This technique is called seismic interferometry. With seismic interferometry we combine the responses of natural sources to a response of a virtual source, located on the position of one of the receivers. The obtained response contains, amongst others, reflections which are used for imaging. For imaging the lithosphere we test the technique both on synthetic data and on field measurements from the Rocky Mountains, the Himalaya and the Tibetan Plateau. For imaging even deeper structures we derive equations and test these on synthetic data. Besides earthquakes, storms over the oceans are a major source of Earth vibrations.

Constantly somewhere on the globe these vibrations are induced and are called microseisms. We show that also microseisms can be used to obtain reflections due to virtual sources. We show this using field measurements conducted in Egypt. We use the obtained reflections to determine the depth and structure of a sedimentary basin. Moreover, we show the possibility to image the entire lithosphere locally, using only a few days of data.
