Cards reproduce details from 17th century Dutch and Flemish paintings from the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Each card has a painting on the front and a recipe on the back: Jan van Huysum's Still Life with Flowers and Fruit, c. 1715, with a recipe for Peaches in Syrup. Balthasar van der Ast's Basket of Fruits, c. 1622, with a recipe for Pear Tart with Currants. Willem Kalf's Still Life, c. 1660, with a recipe for Lemon Custard. Osias Beert the Elder, Dishes with Oysters, Fruit, and Wine, c. 1620/1625, with a recipe for Almond Tartlets. Recipes were adapted for the modern kitchen by food historian Peter G. Rose from the 1683 edition of De Verstandige Kock (The Sensible Cook).
